About

I’m an IT Consultant, technical project manager, business analyst and software developer in Guernsey in the Channel Islands. I’m currently a Consultant Project Manager for C5 Alliance in Guernsey. I was previously the Software Development Manager at Healthspan Group Ltd. I’ve got a PhD in Remote Sensing and Computer Science and the PRINCE2 Practitioner certification.

My primary areas of expertise are:

  • business analysis – understanding client requirements and producing specifications that make sense to the client and technical developers alike. I often act as the interface between the client and the developers – as a technical person I can propose possible solutions to the client without involving the developer; whilst describing in accurate and complex terms, real customer requirements to the developers.
  • technical project management – producing project mandates, plans and scoping documents, and handling administration of work packages. I am a qualified Prince2 Practitioner.
  • high volume email deliverability – I designed and structured a complete in-house e-marketing infrastructure based on the Neolane platform. It routinely achieves 99% deliverability success rates with less than 0.1 complaint rates.
  • software development – I still enjoy getting hands on with code and keeping up to date with latest technology and programming trends. My main areas current of technology expertise are in .NET, SharePoint, workflow, XML and web services, although I cut my teeth on C++. I prefer VB over C# but have never really understood the arguments about which is better – they both use the same CLR. VB has better IntelliSense!
  • database development – there’s something beautiful about SQL
  • web development – I used to do a lot (PHP & MySQL) and started out handcoding static HTML websites in Notepad. I’ve been using publishing platforms like Wordpress for years, though, and they’ve revolutionised the way people publish to the web

I use all Apple or Linux computers at home and use VMWare Fusion for running Windows virtual machines. Working in Microsoft technologies for a job is a “necessary evil” – desktop computing today wouldn’t be where it is today without them.

In my spare time, I’m a keen drummer, cricketer, surfer and cyclist. I also do some freelance proofreading and technical writing.
